Online first aid courses

Pennsylvania follows the federal OSHA rule (29 CFR 1910.151(b)): there is no fixed first-aider-to-employee ratio, but where no infirmary, clinic or hospital is in near proximity, the employer must ensure enough adequately trained first-aiders with supplies readily available. OSHA guidance expects a responder or EMS to reach a victim within 3-4 minutes for high-hazard operations and roughly 15 minutes for lower-hazard sites.

Pennsylvania childcare licensing (55 Pa. Code § 3270.31) requires one or more facility persons competent in pediatric first aid and pediatric CPR to be present whenever children are in care, administered by the Department of Human Services, Office of Child Development and Early Learning (OCDEL). All staff must certify within 90 days of hire, and online courses are accepted.

Pennsylvania's Good Samaritan law (42 Pa.C.S. § 8331) shields a person who renders emergency care gratuitously and in good faith from liability for ordinary negligence, leaving liability only for gross negligence, with nonmedical immunity extended to trained lay rescuers under § 8331.1. AED use is separately protected under § 8331.2, and there is no duty to rescue.

The Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing requires registered nurses to complete 30 contact hours of continuing education every two-year cycle (including 2 hours of child-abuse recognition). Under 49 Pa. Code § 21.133, basic life support or CPR courses are not acceptable toward that requirement, so a CPR course is maintained separately from qualifying CE.

In Pennsylvania, personal-care homes, assisted-living residences and home-care agencies rely on Direct Care Workers, who complete a 6-hour training plus employer requirements; CPR is not a state mandate for most aide roles but is frequently preferred or required by employers. A recognized, up-to-date first-aid and CPR certificate meets this expectation, in addition to occupational training and renewed periodically.

In Pennsylvania, foster family care agencies approve foster homes under 55 Pa. Code Chapter 3700 administered by the Department of Human Services; the regulation does not itself impose a first-aid/CPR certification requirement, but agencies commonly require a current certificate from a recognized organization before a placement. Where required, the certificate must be kept current, in addition to the home study, background checks and suitability assessment.

Online CPR and first aid training is recognized in Pennsylvania, with certification valid for 3 years and no explicit ban on the online format. OSHA does not prohibit online training but its interpretation letters favor a hands-on skills evaluation, so blended formats (online theory + practical component) are recommended.
